    Product review: Keep Tone bread

    July 4, 2018 /

Keep Tone bread is a new brand of keto/paleo/low carb bread currently available at selected health food shops and cafes in NSW (I bought mine at Mr Vitamins Ashfield). Health claims The bread claims to contain “only wholefoods, no nasties”. It is gluten free, dairy free, soy free, yeast free, grain free and has no added sugar. I know most people would think this is no bread… until you try it. What’s in Keep Tone bread? Keep Tone bread currently comes in 3 flavours: rosemary blast, super seeds and divine chocolate. Below are the ingredients for the 2 savoury varieties: Rosemary blast: Almond meal, golden flax meal, coconut flour, free…

Recipe: Ensalada de palmitos y palta (hearts of palm and avocado salad)

    October 2, 2017 /

I make variations of this ensalada de palmitos y palta every time I cook a Peruvian-themed meal. What makes it Peruvian? The avocado, palmitos, botija olives and the fact that is seasoned with lime juice and olive oil. Serve as a side for pretty much anything.

    Naturally Good Expo

    June 8, 2017 /

Last weekend I attended the Naturally Good Expo, a trade-only event for businesses interested in natural food, therapies and goods. I, of course, attended as a private practice dietitian to 1) know what are the market trends that my clients might be exposed to and 2) try products that I can recommend to my clients and/or use myself. I tried a multitude of Bounce®-type energy balls, raw/protein bars, alkaline water, turmeric products, chocolate bars, plant-based protein powders and greens powders. To be honest, I think those product categories are reaching saturation point and it’s hard to differentiate between brands. The most interesting products I personally came across were: Goat milk…

Product review: Healthy Everyday meals by Pete Evans

    April 17, 2017 /

Now that some Woolies shops are stocking Healthy Everyday meals, I took the opportunity to buy a couple and sample them without committing to a big online order. These meals have been designed by Pete Evans and made by Paleo Cafe, which means they are free of gluten, added sugars, etc. One thing that had caught my eye from the website is that the meals stay good for way longer than other ready-made meals we sometimes purchase. This is because the meals are packed in vacuum sealed bags, which make them look less sexy (think hospital food) but increase their shelf life. This also meals that the range includes only…

    Product review: Naked Paleo bars

    July 6, 2014 /

I saw this cacao almond paleo bar in Thr1ve the other day. The label listed dates, almonds, walnuts, shredded coconut, cacao and coconut oil. Pretty clean, so I gave it a go. I ate the bar straight after training. It tasted good (unlike other paleo bars that will remain unnamed) but was very crumbly. It was also too sweet for my taste; I had to sip water in between bites. I wouldn’t eat it on a regular basis but probably as a once-in-a-while dessert. Naked Paleo barsnakedpaleo.com.auOn Facebook

Product review: Global Organics tomato passata

    June 6, 2013 /

I know I’ve ranted before about canned/jarred vegetables, specifically tomatoes. I used to hate them, but know I use them quite often. I think what happened is that I came across the wrong brands/products in the past, often the ones that come with added ingredients that basically ruin the product. I also had more time to cook. Since then, I’ve found a few good products that not only save time but also money. One day browsing through the health food/organic section of my local supermarket, I found a large glass bottle of organic passata (tomato purée) that had nothing else than organic Italian tomatoes. The brand is Global Organics and…

    Product review: Paleo Hero products

    December 13, 2012 /

Since I cleaned up my diet to base it on real nutrient-dense food my snacking has gone down to almost zero. The only occasions I munch on something that is not a main meal is when I’m extremely stressed, or drunk, or travelling, or not hungry enough for a full-sized meal. While my preference will always be to eat minimally processed snacks (nuts, for example), it’s smart to be prepared and have a supply of pre-made snacks that you can grab on the go. While looking for some snacks I could take to my upcoming trip I came across Paleo Hero products. These products are somewhat similar to some of…

Product review: Hunted and Gathered products

    December 12, 2012 /

Jerky has got to be the best snack ever. While often an image of an American cowboy or truck driver comes to mind, it’s been around for longer than people think, and not only in North America. My ancestors have been eating it forever (in Quechua it’s called charqui and it’s often made of alpaca). What makes jerky so good? It’s cured and dried, so it keeps forever. It’s high in protein, which apart from replenishing your body’s needs, keeps you satisfied much longer than carbs. It’s light in weight, making it perfect for hiking, cycling, etc. It’s tasty. Sadly it’s hard to find commercial jerky that is not full…
