Are all sausages bad for you?

    May 15, 2019 /

Most people won’t associate sausage sizzle or bangers and mash with healthy food. In fact, many doctors and dietitians tell people to avoid them. But are all sausages bad? What is a sausage? According to the dictionary, a sausage (a.k.a. snag in this part of the World) is “a highly seasoned minced meat (such as pork) usually stuffed in casings of prepared animal intestine” (1). What the World Health Organization says In their Q&A about consumption of meat and cancer, the WHO includes hot dogs and sausages in the processed meat category. They found convincing evidence from epidemiological studies that links processed meat with a small increase in the risk…

Recipe: Lamb kofta with roasted Mediterranean vegetables

    January 12, 2019 /

Kofta are basically meatballs or sausages that can be made in several different ways depending on where in the World they are made. I like them made with lamb and either a Middle Eastern or Mediterranean twist. This recipe for lamb kofta with roasted Mediterranean vegetables is not only easy to make but also gluten-free, low-carb and highly customisable. You can swap the meat, spices and vegetables for whatever you have in hand.

Product review: Chrissy’s Cuts sausages (plus recipe inside)

    February 21, 2016 /

Chrissy’s Cuts sausages are made with quality cuts of meat that come from ethically farmed free-range and grass-fed animals. In addition, they do not contain any fillers, flours, nitrates or additives. I love her tagline “because meat shouldn’t be a mystery”. The current varieties on offer are beef brisket with smuggled greens and pork shoulder with bacon and maple syrup (killer combo!). I got a pack of the latter to sample. As you can see from the photo below, the ingredients list is super clean. Instead of just cooking the sausages and throwing them on a pile of coleslaw (my default modus operandi), I decided to use them to make…

Recipe: Crustless sausage & spinach quiche

    November 24, 2013 /

I know, I know… this is getting kinda boring but we’ve been really enjoying the variety of breakfast quiches I’ve been coming up with. This crustless sausage & spinach quiche is easily customised to whatever ingredients you have available. For this one I didn’t even have to go to the market, as the sausages and spinach were already in my freezer. The snags were pork & ginger from Feather and Bone, the best quality you can possibly get: pastured-fed pork, no fillers (and therefore grain- and gluten-free), and amazing flavour. This recipe is gluten-free (depending on the sausages you use) and low-carb. This crustless sausage & spinach quiche is easily…
