Product review: FroPro singles

FroPro singles are a healthier “ice cream on a stick” option for people looking for a frozen treat that doesn’t pack up the calories and keeps carbs and sugar low.

FroPro singles

FroPro singles are another product from the healthier ice cream manufacturer FroPro. These are Magnum-style ice cream on a stick covered in a hard chocolate shell. FroPro singles come in 3 flavours: Double Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Plant Based Vanilla. They are available at Woolworths supermarkets, often at a discounted price.

Each box contains 4x 400ml sticks. All the flavours are gluten-free. The Double Chocolate and Salted Caramel flavours are milk-based and higher in protein than the Plant Based Vanilla flavour, which has coconut cream as the base. All the flavours are low in carbs and sugar, with less than 3 grams of per serve for the milk-based flavours and less than 1 gram per serve for the plant-based flavour. The grams per serve for all the singles is higher than for the tub ice creams, presumably due to the chocolate coating.

• Double Chocolate: Milk, dark chocolate coating (30%) [(cocoa solids (55%), maltitol, emulsifier (soya lecithin), natural flavours), cocoa butter, coconut oil, emusifier (476, 442)], milk protein concentrate, xylitol, skim milk powder, chocolate ripple (1.8%) [water, polydextrose, glycerine, inulin, cocoa powder (7%), stabilisers (1442, xanthan gum), natural flavouring, food acid (270), salt, stevia (960)], cocoa powder (1.7%), stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), water, glycerine, mono-diglyceride, vegetable gums (locust bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan).
• Salted Caramel: Milk, dark chocolate coating (30%) [(cocoa solids (55%), maltitol, emulsifier (soya lecithin), natural flavours), cocoa butter, coconut oil, emusifier (476, 442)], milk protein concentrate, xylitol, skim milk powder, water, caramel ripple (1.8%) [water, polydextrose, glycerine, inulin, skim milk powder, stabiliser (1442, xantham gum), natural flavouring, salt, caramel colour (150a), food acid (332, 270), mineral salt (339), natural colour (beetroot juice concentrate), stevia], stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), glycerine, mono-diglyceride, vegetable gums (locust bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan), natural flavour, salt, annatto extract.
• Plant Based Vanilla: Dark chocolate coating (32%) [(cocoa solids (55%), maltitol, emulsifier (soya lecithin), natural flavours), cocoa butter, coconut oil, emulsifier (476, 442)], water, coconut cream (28%), xylitol, stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), mono-diglyceride, vegetable gums (locust bean gum, guar gum, carrageenan), natural vanilla flavour (0.1%), salt.

Taste test

We tried the Salted Caramel and Plant Based Vanilla flavours. We enjoyed both flavours although we found the Salted Caramel a little bit too sweet. The Plant Based Vanilla has the right amount of sweeteness but could use more vanilla flavour or a change of name, as the coconut flavour is overpowering. The chocolate coating shatters with a satisfying crunch, giving the treat a nice textural contrast. As other healthier ice creams (e.g. YoPro, FroPro tub ice cream and Denada), these melt quicker than traditional ice cream.

Summary and recommendations

This is an ok treat to have once in a while as it’s lower in carbs, sugar and energy than regular ice cream. However, they are still a processed food and shouldn’t be had on a regular basis.

In addition, this product may cause issues to people sensitive to sugar alcohols and any of the listed additives.
