Product review: Aussielent
Aussielent is the Australian version of Soylent, a meal replacement product that became popular a few years ago among US tech entrepreneurs. It was designed to provide all the necessary nutrients to people who were too busy to prepare/purchase and eat real food. Soylent has been tried and reviewed over the years by podcasters and the general public. I heard a few of those a while ago, enough to make me not want to try it. However, the opportunity to try the Aussie version arose when I found a bottle of the product in my Fitness Show goodies bag. Keep reading if you want to know what I thought of…

Product review: Bega Simply Nuts Peanut Butter
Bega Simply Nuts Peanut Butter is yet another great choice in the spreads aisle. It is great to see that big companies are responsive to consumers expectations of products without added oil and sugar. Okay, if you want to be pedantic about it, peanuts are not nuts (they’re legumes). The range includes crunchy, smooth and rustic grind. You can find them in the spread aisle in major supermarkets. Ingredients Crunchy: Roasted peanuts (99.5%), salt Smooth: Roasted peanuts (99.5%), salt Rustic grind: Roasted peanuts (100%) Nutrition…

Product review: Siggi’s Icelandic-style yoghurt
Siggi’s Icelandic-style yoghurt entered the market recently, following the steps of Woolworths skyr and Nudie Icelandic yoghurt. About Siggi’s Icelandic-style yoghurt The back of the label tells us about how Siggi (the person) began making yoghurt and the characteristics of the product. Skyr is strained yoghurt, making it more concentrated than regular yoghurt. The range is currently available in 0.5% (plain and flavoured) and 4% fat yoghurt (flavoured). Health claims The lid announces “more protein than sugar per tub”, which it’s to be expected of all yoghurts, in my opinion. The label claims “simple ingredients, not a lot of sugar”, “all natural”, as well as no stevia, aspartame, sucralose, gelatin,…

Product review: Keto Nutrition sports supplements
It’s undeniable that keto (i.e. the ketogenic diet) has gone mainstream. Keto recipes are flooding the internet and keto food products the supermarket shelves. Sports supplements are not an exception, with Keto Nutrition being one of the newest brands in the market dedicated to athletes who choose this nutrition strategy. Disclaimers: I received a sample pack free of charge from the manufacturer. I do not advocate for a ketogenic diet for healthy people or athletes as a blanket statement. The supplements Keto Nutrition offers a range of sports gels, protein bars, hydration powders and exogenous ketones (exogenous = from outside, meaning ketones you consume instead of produce in your body).…

Product review: Gluten-free Vegemite
Vegemite is one of the most iconic Australian foods. The spread, made from brewer’s yeast extract, is finally available in a gluten-free version. ‘Pure Vegetable Extract’ was developed in the early 1920s. The product went through a few name changes and a rough start due to the already established popularity of Marmite, the British version. Eventually marketing succeeded and Vegemite is now the spread of choice of many Australians. Gluten in Vegemite Original Vegemite is not gluten-free because the malt extract is derived from barley and the yeast extract is made from yeast grown on barley and wheat. My Vegemite story The first time my husband and I came to…
