  • Lentil and radish salad with salmon and tahini dressing

Recipe: Lentil and radish salad with salmon and tahini dressing

    October 24, 2022 /

This Middle Eastern-inspired lentil and radish salad with salmon and tahini dressing is packed with fibre, protein, and most importantly, flavour. The salad by itself is vegan, gluten-free and high in fibre. In addition, it has a decent amount of protein (18.6 g per serve) thanks to the lentils. With the salmon, the total protein content is about 45 grams per serve. I smoked the salmon using smoker boxes filled with cherry wood chips in my gas grill. As indicated in the recipe, you can pan-fry the salmon if you don’t have the gear to smoke it. Don’t eat salmon? You can substitute other protein source (e.g. grilled or roasted…

    Recipe: Smoky eggplant dip

    April 24, 2021 /

This smoky eggplant dip is essentially a shortcut version of one of my favourite dips ever: baba ghanoush. Specially formulated for those days when you don’t have the time or equipment to make the real deal. Instead of imparting a smoky flavour by actually charring the eggplant, this recipe relies on smoked paprika and smoked salt, two of my favourite ingredients. This dip is gluten-free, dairy-free, low-carb, vegetarian and vegan. You can enjoy it with veggie sticks or crackers (such as Carman’s or Olina’s) or as a sauce to serve with Middle Eastern fare.

Recipe: Quinoa, lentil & beetroot vegan bowls

    March 23, 2019 /

These quinoa, lentil & beetroot vegan bowls are a tasty meal packed with plant-based protein, iron and fibre. The dressing contains lemon to provide vitamin C, which your body needs to absorb the non-haem iron. You will also get some healthy unsaturated fats from the olive oil and seeds, and calcium mainly from the tahini. These bowls taste great warm but can also be eating straight out of the fridge if you have leftovers. If you’re a vegetarian or omnivore, feel free to add or substitute part of the protein with other foods such as boiled eggs, cheese, tuna, smoked salmon or poached chicken. One final note: I have specified…

Recipe: Double chocolate, adzuki and black sesame bliss balls

    September 15, 2018 /

Double chocolate, that’s all you need to know. Don’t worry about the hippie stuff 🙂 Ok, ok, as you can gather from the recipe name, these balls have beans in them. Beans are a great source of fibre, low GI carbohydrate and a decent source of protein. They can cause gastrointestinal discomfort to some people, which can be minimised by preparation steps such as soaking, sprouting and fermenting. This recipe came about because I had rescued some adzuki beans from going in the bin. Since these beans are commonly used in desserts, I thought I’d make myself a healthy treat with them. I though I would continue with the Asian…

This soup was inspired by this wonderful beet hummus. While thinking about what to make for dinner one night I remembered I had extra roasted beetroot and lemons in my fridge, and that recipe automatically came to mind.
