    Protein yoghurts

    April 26, 2025 /

Protein yoghurts are the food industry’s response to the demand on higher protein in an already protein-containing food. What is yoghurt At its simplest, yoghurt is a fermented dairy product made by adding specific bacterial cultures to milk. While there are non-dairy yoghurt alternatives, we will be talking about dairy yoghurt in this article. Why yoghurt? I recommend regular yoghurt consumption to most of my clients. This is because yoghurt is a source of protein, calcium and probiotics. Adequate protein intake is fundamental for every aspect of life. Moreover, individuals who are highly active, who are looking to improve body composition or who need to mitigate muscle and/or bone mass…

    Product review: Kehoe’s Kitchen sauerkraut

    June 25, 2015 /

Now that fermented foods are in fashion (yay!) there are quite a few new interesting brands popping up. This bright pink jar in my local health food shop caught my eye, especially when I read the ingredients list: red cabbage, apple, garlic & fennel seeds. I really liked this sauerkraut, I didn’t find the garlic too strong at all. The only downside, as with all good fermented products, would be the price (I paid $19.95). Product review: Tonicka kombucha

    October 23, 2014 /

I get excited every time I see a new brand of kombucha popping up because that means I can continue avoiding making my own. The medium size of Tonicka kombucha (330 ml) comes in an elegant dark bottle that made me think of boutique beer. I bought it at Dr Earth for $5.14 (discounted from $6.50). They make only one flavour, which is a good thing because that means no added sugary mixes to their brew. I liked its crisp, tangy flavour. Will buy again. Product review: Kimchi

    October 7, 2013 /

Kimchi rocks. I love the stuff but so far I’ve been too lazy to attempt making at home and I didn’t know where to buy it. One day after attending a tech event I decided to stop at Maruyu on my way to Town Hall. While browsing the refrigerated section I found Park’s kimchi. The ingredients list looked pretty clean (it does have sugar but at least is listed after salt). Good stuff. So far my favourite way of eating it is with sardines and avocado, wrapped in nori. Not long after that I stopped at Miracle Supermarket on King Street to buy some shrimp paste. I was pleased to…

Product review: Mojo Kombucha and Kombucha Wonder Drink

    February 10, 2013 /

The first time I heard the word kombucha was in System Of A Down’s Sugar (“the kombucha mushroom people, sitting around all day…”). Curious as I am, I looked for the term online and found that it was a fermented drink that hippies used to drink. I was incredibly uninterested for years until I heard Angelo Coppola mentioning his kombucha brewing and drinking habits in his podcast. I had been making and eating sauerkraut for a while, tried store-bought and homemade kefir, and was keen on introducing more probiotic-containing fermented foods into my diet. On a particularly hot day, I bought a bottle of original flavour Mojo Kombucha at my…
