Product review: Nutriboost

Nutriboost is a high protein flavoured milk drink made with no added sugar. It is enriched with fibre and vitamin D and has a 5 health star rating.

Nutriboost

Nutriboost is made by infamous Coca-Cola Company. Before you stop reading, remember that they also make water, juice and other not-so-bad-for-you beverages.

Nutriboost is enriched with milk proteins, polydextrose as a source of fibre, and vitamin D. It is sweetened with an artificial sweetener.

The drink comes in 3 flavours: chocolate, vanilla and banana. It is available at Woolworths supermarkets, and often discounted when buying 5 or more.

Ingredients

Below are the ingredients lists for the current 3 flavours. Note they are made from reconstituted milk and contain additives such as flavours, stabilisers, food acids and artificial sweetener.

  • Chocolate: Milk (from milk solids) 92%, milk proteins (calcium caseinate, milk protein concentrate), dietary fibre (polydextrose), cocoa powder (0.7%), flavour, stabilisers (466, 407), enzyme (lactase), food acids (339, 331), sweetener (960), vitamin D
  • Vanilla: Milk (from milk solids) 93%, milk proteins (calcium caseinate, milk protein concentrate), dietary fibre (polydextrose), flavour, enzyme (lactase), food acids (339, 331), stabilisers (460, 466, 407), sweetener (960), vitamin D.
  • Banana: Milk (from milk solids) 93%, milk proteins (calcium caseinate, milk protein concentrate), dietary fibre (polydextrose), flavour, enzyme (lactase), food acids (339, 331), stabilisers (460, 466, 407), sweetener (960), vitamin D.

Taste test

The 3 flavours taste nice and have a pleasant texture. They are not extremely sweet and, thanks to the added enzymes, are easy to digest. I have not noticed a chemical aftertaste that many sugar-free products have.

Summary and recommendations

Nutriboost is a good alternative to sugar-sweetened flavoured milks for people looking to reduce their added sugar intake. Having said that, it contains several additives and artificial sweetener, which can cause issues to some people and are potentially not great for the gut microbiome. I would not recommend it as a daily snack but as an occasional convenient drink to have, for example, after exercise, on a hike or when requiring a portable breakfast.
