Product review: Revvies Energy Strips
Caffeine can be a useful tool in your arsenal to enhance athletic performance. Caffeine supplements come in many forms, all of which have pros and cons. Revvies Energy Strips deliver caffeine in a super convenient package.
Revvies Energy Strips
Revvies Energy Strips are a caffeine sports supplement. Each strip contains 40mg of caffeine, equivalent to about half a cup of coffee according to the manufacturer. If you have been following my posts on caffeine, you’ll notice that this is less than 1mg per kg of body weight for most of us.
The strips are small and super light weight, so they can be carrier around in your bag or shorts. Unlike other forms of caffeine supplements such as capsules, gum or powder, Revvies are taken without water and there is no chewing involved.
Revvies are batch tested so there is no risk of consuming banned substances inadvertently. The strips are sugar-free and currently come in two flavours: arctic charge and tropical hit.
Ingredients
- Arctic Charge: Starch, thickener (hydroxypropyl cellulose), caffeine, hydrogenated vegetable oil (may contain soybean oil), sweetener (glycerol), maltodextrin, anticaking agent (cellulose microcrystalline), flavouring (peppermint), thickener (xanthan gum), flavouring (menthol, liquid), sweetener (sucralose), emulsifier (sucrose esters of fatty acids), colouring (billiant blue FCF).
- Tropical Hit: Starch, thickener (hydroxypropyl cellulose), caffeine, hydrogenated vegetable oil (may contain soybean oil), sweetener (glycerol), maltodextrin, anticaking agent (cellulose microcrystalline), flavouring (fruit punch), thickener (xanthan gum), sweetener (sucralose), emulsifier (sucrose esters of fatty acids), colouring (allura red ac).
How to consume
The strips should be put directly on the tongue and rubbed against the roof of the mouth until dissolved. The manufacturer recommends consuming 1 strip unless you are a habitual caffeine user, in which case you can try 2 strips.
Taste test
I got a couple of free samples in Arctic Charge flavour and tried them before a morning strength & condition session and before an evening Krav session.
Flavour-wise, they reminded me of Listerine strips. They dissolve pretty quickly so you shouldn’t worry too much about the flavour. I did not feel a huge boost in alertness or energy levels. However, my CYP1A2 genotype is AC (read more about this in my previous post about caffeine), which means I will likely not experience any performance effects with caffeine supplementation.
