    Product review: True Protein bars

    November 9, 2019 /

My favourite protein brand has launched a new product. True Protein bars are a high protein snack designed with the athlete in mind. True Protein bars These bars are made with minimally processed ingredients. The main source of protein is whey protein concentrate, good. They also contain hydrolysed collagen peptides, which may help support soft tissue, bone health and gut health. True Protein bars are gluten-free and sweetened with dates. They contain a decent amount of dietary fibre, which comes from organic tapioca isomaltooligosaccharide (IMO), almonds, dates and chia seeds. These bars come in 2 flavours: salted caramel and rich chocolate. Each bar weighs 65g (the little ones in the…

    Product review: Chief collagen bars

    October 26, 2019 /

Chief collagen bars are the most recent product line launched by this brand of “clean” snacks. They are made in Australia with natural ingredients, targeted to active people looking for healthier alternatives. Chief collagen bars These bars have nuts as their main ingredient, followed, of course, by hydrolysed collagen. They do not contain dried fruit, and therefore are low in sugar. As discussed in my article about collagen, it might support soft tissue, skin and bone health. Note that, despite it being a type of protein, it does not necessarily support muscle growth. Other interesting ingredients are camu camu (a Peruvian fruit) as source of vitamin C, bamboo fibre as…

Product review: Keto Nutrition sports supplements

    March 9, 2019 /

It’s undeniable that keto (i.e. the ketogenic diet) has gone mainstream. Keto recipes are flooding the internet and keto food products the supermarket shelves. Sports supplements are not an exception, with Keto Nutrition being one of the newest brands in the market dedicated to athletes who choose this nutrition strategy. Disclaimers: I received a sample pack free of charge from the manufacturer. I do not advocate for a ketogenic diet for healthy people or athletes as a blanket statement. The supplements Keto Nutrition offers a range of sports gels, protein bars, hydration powders and exogenous ketones (exogenous = from outside, meaning ketones you consume instead of produce in your body).…

Product review: Ecobar raw energy bars

    November 2, 2015 /

Shout-out to my classmate Rob who posted a picture of Ecobars on Facebook. I’ve been wanting to try cricket bars since I heard about Exo bars 1-2 years ago, but they were not available in Australia. Now we have Ecobars, made with cricket flour, perhaps the most sustainable source of protein. I bought these for $3.95 each at Healthy Living. The currently available flavours are mango orange and chia spirulina. We liked both and no, you cannot taste the crickets. Maybe because the flour is not one of the top ingredients, which also means the bars are higher in carbs than protein. Ingredients in the chia spirulina bars are: dates,…
