Product review: FroPro ice cream

FroPro ice cream, self-proclaimed Australia’s favourite healthy ice cream, is high in protein, low in fat, low in sugar and gluten free.

FroPro ice cream

FroPro ice cream comes in tubs with 473-520ml, depending on the flavour. Current flavours include: Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Strawberry With Berry Ripple and Keto Chocolate and are available in Woolworths supermarkets.

All flavours are high in protein, low fat, have no added sugar, are low glycemic index and gluten free. In addition, the Keto Chocolate one is very low carb (less than 2 grams per serve) and dairy-free.

Each tub contains 4 servings as per the nutrition information panel, which is a reasonable size.

Ingredients

1. Chocolate: Milk, milk protein concentrate, xylitol, skim milk powder, cocoa powder (2.6%) , stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), vegetable glycerin, water, mono-diglyceride, stabilisers (guar gum, xanthan gum, locust bean gum).
2. Salted Caramel: Milk, milk protein concentrate, xylitol, skim milk powder, water, stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), vegetable glycerin, mono-diglyceride, vegetable gums (guar gum, xantham gum, locust bean gum), natural flavour, salt (0.3%), natural colour (160b).
3. Strawberry: Milk, berry ripple (9.6%) [fruit 30% (strawberry puree, blackberry puree, raspberry puree), polydextrose, water, humectant, inulin, modified corn starch, vegetable gum (415), vegetable extract (black carrot concentrate), natural flavours, food acid (332, 330), stevia], milk protein concentrate, xylitol, skim milk powder, water, stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), glycerin, mono-diglyceride, stabiliser (guar gum, xanthan gum, locust bean gum), natural colour (red beet), natural strawberry flavour.
4. Keto Chocolate: Coconut cream (38%), water, xylitol, chocolate syrup (8.5%) [water, polydextrose, humectant, inulin, cocoa powder (7%), stabiliser (modified maize starch (1442), xanthan gum), natural flavouring, food acid (270), salt, stevia], cocoa powder (2.7%), stevia blend (erythritol, stevia), mono-diglyceride, stabilisers (guar gum, xanthan gum, locust bean gum), salt.

Note that the sweeteners used are a mix of xylitol, erythritol (a sugar alcohol) and stevia. Some sugar alcohols may cause digestive issues to some people. Also, there a few additives in all flavours, mainly for texture and flavour.

Taste test

We tried the Chocolate and Strawberry with Berry Ripple flavours. We liked both but noted the Chocolate had a more natural flavour. We didn’t find them to have a sweetener aftertaste, which is a good thing. Texture-wise, the ice cream is indeed creamy. It melts quite quickly.

Summary and recommendations

This is an ok treat to have once in a while as it’s lower in fat, sugar and energy, and higher in protein than regular ice cream. However, they are still a processed food and shouldn’t be had on a regular basis.

In addition, this product may cause issues to people sensitive to sugar alcohols and any of the listed additives.
