Below are 10 outstanding flavour combinations that I use over and over again. I encourage you to try these or come up with new and exciting ways of enjoying food.
1. Eggs and hot sauce
This is my weekend brunch staple, eggs cooked any way (soft-boiled, fried or scrambled) with some sort of hot sauce. I always keep a variety of hot sauces in my fridge to match the overall vibe of the dish.
2. Avocado and vegemite
I learned to like Vegemite many years after moving to Australia. Now I appreciate its salty umami flavour and really enjoy pairing it with avocado on toast or rice cakes.
3. Tomato and vegemite
Similar to avocado, I enjoy “seasoning” tomato slices with a thin spread of Vegemite on either toast, rice cakes or seeded crackers.
4. Figs and goat’s cheese
The sweetness of ripe figs pair really well with the sharp flavour of any style of goat’s cheese, from soft and spreadable to hard and mature. This is a great addition to any grazing platter, as a topping for a slice of bread or crackers or on its own as a snack.
5. Coffee and vanilla
I know you are thinking vanilla syrup in coffee (or its equivalent trademark name) but no, here I’m talking about cold brewed coffee and vanilla protein powder. This is one of my favourite daytime post-workout treats.
6. Apple and tasty/cheddar/gouda
Apples pair really well with many cheeses. Apple and cheddar is a classic combination, but it also pairs well with tasty cheese and gouda.
7. Peanut butter and bananas
Another classic combination that goes well on its own but also makes a terrific snack for active people, especially when used as a filling for sandwiches or as a topping for rice cakes. They also work really well together in smoothies.
8. Mushrooms and balsamic vinegar
The earthy notes of mushroom pair really well with balsamic vinegar. I love this combination when adding sauteed mushrooms to my weekend brunch plate.
9. Artichokes and pesto
Pesto loves many vegetables, but one many people forget about is the lovely artichoke. This applies to both fresh artichokes, which are harder to source and prepare, and jarred ones, which are much more convenient and good to keep in the pantry.
10. Fried eggs and oregano
Closing the list with eggs, this is a great combination you should try. There is no reason it can’t work with eggs cooked another way, but I was introduced to this combination with fried eggs. Why settle with salt and pepper if you can do salt, pepper and oregano?
